Emotion Regulation & Coping Skills For eating disorders

Overview

This is a group designed to help individuals who struggle with disordered eating or eating disorders. Individuals with disordered eating often have difficulty with emotion. This can involve emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, anger outbursts, emotional breakdowns, and self-harm or emotional over-regulation, which involves shutting down emotions, putting up walls, numbing out feelings. If you struggle with disordered eating or an eating disorder and it feels like you are not in control of your emotions but rather that they control you, you may benefit from learning some emotion regulation and coping skills.


This group is informed by dialectical-behavioural therapy (DBT),  emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). This group will provide components of DBT along with components of EFT and CBT to help individuals learn to cope  in healthier ways.

Group Details

  • This is a open group, which means that you can join and leave at any time. However, this is not a drop in group, which means that you must registered prior to attending. Registration is done via email or phone. 


  • The group will consist of 3-8 participants. All participants will be adults (>18) who struggle in some way with eating related concerns.  


  • The group will occur once per week.


  • Each session will be 90 minutes long. 


  • The group will take place on Thursday evenings  from 6:00-7:30 pm. 


  • The group will begin running once there are at least 3 confirmed participants. 


  • Handouts, pens, and paper will be provided in group.  

What will this cost?

Each session will cost $50. Payment will be collected at the beginning of group. Payment can be made credit card, cash, or e-transfer. 

What will we do?

This group will focus on a variety of topics and skills related to eating disorders, including: emotional awareness and regulation, understanding cycles that fuel the eating disorder symptoms, practical skills to re-structure unhelpful cycles or patterns. 


Each week the facilitator will cover a new  skill that is aimed to help participants learn alternative healthy coping strategies. 


The group will provide a place to talk openly and honestly about your fears, hopes, worries, and struggles in life. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss their successes and challenges in practicing the skills learned the week before, if they desire to do so. 


Each group will end with an intention for the week ahead regarding how we will work to put this skill into practice. 

How do I register?

All individuals who are interested in the group will have a brief phone consultation  with the facilitator to discuss some of the group details such as informed consent, confidentiality, goals, and group fit. This consultation will be roughly 15-30 minutes long and is free for anyone interested in the group.
