Counselling Services for Children and Adolescents in Edmonton, AB

A Family-focused Approach

At Stillar Psychological we provide counselling services for children and adolescents. We offer a variety of approaches to working with kids that utilize therapeutic play, games, and activities to help engage them in the therapy process and allow them to express themselves in a number of ways.

We also believe in the tremendous healing power of parents and families. Based in this perspective, we often use a family-focused approach wherein parents and caregivers are treated as vital members of their child’s treatment team.

We find that including parents in the treatment process, whether by providing them with information about their child’s illness, discussing family patterns that may be inadvertently maintaining the illness, or teaching them skills that might be helpful in coping with their child’s behaviors, can be very powerful for recovery.

At Stillar Psychological, we recognize the power of attachment. Parents and children are emotionally and neurologically connected. We attempt to harness the power of that bond to help facilitate the treatment and recovery process. This is often done by supporting parents to take an active role in their child’s treatment. With continued support and guidance by their child’s counsellor, we believe that parents can learn all the skills they need to help their child recover and flourish.

At Stillar Psychological, we respect the autonomy of every individual. It is important for children and adolescents to feel that they have a safe space to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. This may mean meeting with a counsellor on their own, without having their parents actively involved. In this way, Stillar Psychological is flexible in providing services that feel like the best fit to the child/adolescent and their parents.
